The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Celebrates ... - Cancer Kick

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Aug. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ? Remarkable progress has been made in treating patients with blood cancers, with survival rates for many having doubled or tripled, and in some cases quadrupled, since The Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) was founded in 1949. Yet, more than 1 million North Americans are fighting blood cancers, the third leading cause of cancer death.

Each September LLS observes Blood Cancer Awareness Month to shed light on these diseases and let the public know about all the resources available for blood cancer patients and their families.?

To coincide with the 30 days of September, LLS will conduct a ?30-Drop Campaign,? comprised of 30 blood drops, each containing a significant fact about blood cancer and LLS?s impact. There will also be an extensive giving campaign, including text-to-donate and online donations throughout the month to support blood cancer research and patient services.

The campaign includes a poster, online and social networking components, and an ad placement in USA Today, as well as in local media.

?Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase the public?s understanding of blood cancers and encourage people to support the funding of research to find cures and education programs to help patients have the best possible outcomes throughout their cancer experience,? said LLS President and CEO John Walter.

For more than 60 years, LLS has been a beacon of help and guidance to those touched by blood cancer.?

Since its inception LLS has invested more than $875 million in research to find cures and better therapies. LLS supports investigators? efforts to find new molecular targets for treatment and potential immunotherapies, and helps them translate their laboratory findings into more effective therapies for patients. Its Therapy Acceleration Program (TAP) is a bold initiative to quickly develop the next round of blood cancer therapies. And the impact is being felt: survival rates for children with acute lymphocytic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, have risen over the past 40 years from 3 percent to nearly 90 percent today; Hodgkin lymphoma patient survival rates have doubled to 86 percent since the 1960s, and survival rate for myeloma patents has more than tripled in the past decade.

Through its patient services programs, LLS offers a comprehensive array of education and support services to blood cancer patients and their families. There are family support groups, free patient education workshops featuring health experts, and First Connection ? a peer-to-peer support program that matches newly diagnosed patients with trained volunteer survivors. A back to school program helps children treated for cancer transition back to school. LLS also provides financial assistance to patients with significant financial need and an insurance co-pay assistance program.

LLS?s web site ? www.LLS.org ? is the definitive resource for information about blood cancers and its Information Resource Center (IRC) is a call center staffed by master?s level social workers, nurses and health educators who provide information, support and resources to patients and their families and caregivers. IRC information specialists are available at (800) 955-4572, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

'Inspirational' Paralympics to open in London

The Paralympic torch was on Wednesday heading to London in an overnight relay through the countryside of southern England, to arrive in the capital for the Games' traditional opening ceremony.

The Paralympic torch was lit at the spiritual home of disabled sport -- Stoke Mandeville -- on Tuesday evening and sent on a 92-mile journey southeast carried by 116 teams of five people.

Once in London, it will pass well-known landmarks such as Lord's cricket ground, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey and Tower Bridge, gradually heading east to the Olympic Stadium for the ceremony at 1930 GMT.

Queen Elizabeth was due to formally open the Games during a spectacular called "Enlightenment", billed as a "celebration of the inspirational spirit of the Paralympic Games that challenges perceptions of human possibility".

The British Paralympic Association (BPA) said earlier this year that the ceremony would be "groundbreaking in its inclusivity and innovative staging", showcasing deaf and disabled artists.

The ceremony has been created by artistic directors Jenny Sealey and Bradley Hemmings, both of whom have a long history of hosting live shows involving disabled performers.

More than 3,000 adults will be among the cast, as well as over 100 children and 100-plus professional performers, while "Aerobility", a British charity that trains disabled people to become pilots, will perform a fly-past, the BPA said.

The traditional curtain-raiser to 11 days of elite disability sport comes as the Games have been hailed as the biggest and most-high profile Paralympics since the inaugural edition in Rome in 1960.

A record 4,200 athletes, including an unprecedented number of women, are due to take part in 20 sports, with the event a near sell-out for the first time and due to be broadcast to millions worldwide.

Organisers believe much of the interest has come after a successful Olympics for British athletes, which saw the host nation finish third in the overall medal table behind the United States and China.

Britain is also considered the "spiritual home" of the Paralympics, as the first recognised sports events for athletes with disabilities was held in Stoke Mandeville in 1948.

The sporting action begins on Thursday, with shooting set to provide the first gold of the Games in the women's 10m standing air rifle.

Medals are also up for grabs in the velodrome with the finals of the men and women's individual pursuit, in four weight categories in judo at the ExCel Arena and at the Aquatics Centre, where 15 swimming finals are to be held.

The showpiece athletics programme gets under way on Friday, with the highlight Oscar Pistorius, who is seeking to defend his T44 100m, 200m and 400m titles from Beijing four years ago.

Pistorius, dubbed the "Blade Runner" because he runs on carbon fibre blades, made history earlier this month by becoming the first double-amputee to compete in the Olympics, when he ran in the 400m heats and 4x400m relay final.

But on Tuesday he played down expectations of repeating his Beijing treble, with Britain's world-record holder Jonnie Peacock and world champion Jerome Singleton of the United States likely to feature in the 100m final.

"It's important to note that I haven't run a 100m personal best in five years. It's not really my event," he told a news conference, adding that he would "be happy" with a medal of any colour in the blue riband sprint.

Hyundai Starting to Hog the U.S. Automotive Road | InvestorPlace

? ?

Popular Posts:

Recent Posts:

I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. The only thing holding Hyundai back is the fact that its production facilities at the time were already running near full capacity. And while the company is reportedly contemplating adding more production facilities, a decline in demand from buyers in Europe has allowed Hyundai to ship some inventory originally intended for Europe back to the U.S.

To be certain, things haven?t been all roses for Hyundai, especially recently. The company?s exports stalled in July, down some 23% because of a labor dispute that has crippled production. According to the company, the total number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in July sank to 120,493, a big drop from the 156,200 units made in the previous month.

Here?s the money quote from the Hyundai statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal: ?U.S. dealerships for Hyundai and Kia had some difficulty meeting soaring demand due to a shortage of vehicles.? Moreover, the company said it had less than a month of inventory remaining as of Aug. 1. That?s well below the optimal inventory levels of 60 days.

The supply constraints caused by the strike in South Korean production facilities will likely take its toll on Hyundai and Kia sales, but whatever sales disruption takes place, it will likely be a mere bump in the road for the company. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. So, if you?re an investor in U.S. auto stocks, you better keep your eyes on the rearview mirror ? because Hyundai is catching up.

As of this writing, Jim Woods did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

3 Last Minute Survival Scenarios - Emergency Food

3 Last Minute Survival Scenarios by SurvivingSurvivalism.com

We know that waiting till the last second is not a good idea, but for some it is the only option. So we have taken three possible average scenarios and broken them down for you. All scenarios will include a family of 4 ? Mom, Dad and two kids under high school age ? living in the suburbs of a megaplex city...

Scenario #1

1. You have a few cases of water
2. You have some freeze-dried storage food, maybe a 30 day supply.
3. You have some sleeping bags and some basic camping supplies.
4. You have a general idea of the area to which you want to go.
5. You think maybe something might happen in which case you could need to get your family out of the city.
6. All supplies are in the garage, ready to load into your minivan should the need arise.

You live in a suburban area of a mexaplex city ? first and foremost, where the hell are you going to go? If you are starting out with only a general idea of where to go, you planning to fail. Knowing exactly where you are going and a little preparation is very much in order. Even if your plan is to squat on BLM land, National Forest Service land or private land, just having a general idea of where you are going is dangerous. You, see, in your suburb of a megaplex area, how many other people have the same general idea? Of those of like mind, most likely that's a very high percentage. So have something better than a general idea. Know exactly where you are going and if it's remote enough, you can hide supplies (not what you must have for survival, but that which you would like to have with you there) in the trees. You just need a cammo cargo net and some rope. Hoist it high into a tree, hidden by the foliage.
Here is an idea I've been discussing with people lately. Call it Free Advice: If you have no where to go then the National Forrest my be your best bet. There are several very remote FREE National Forrest camp grounds,? that you can take advantage of. There is one around here (20 miles away) that is very remote and almost no one comes around unless its elk season (Sept. thru Dec.). So before you decide on a campground, check out what dates are the hunting season. Some National Forrest campgrounds have water, some have toilet dumps, most have toilets, some have showers... I have even seen a laundrette at one, and almost no one ever using it. The occasional park ranger will pass by. The Free campground space can by used for 14 consecutive days at a time. Some park rangers interpret this to mean that you must leave the park others interpret it that you have to move to another space in the same campground every 14 days. Either way, if you had to leave the park for one day, only to return the next day, that works, too.

Next to consider is, what would prompt your leaving? Most everyone completely ignores this one because they believe that when the time comes, they'll ?just know?. What is needed is a clear-cut definition of what event would prompt your bugging out. Even if you jump the gun and get to your survival location too soon, you can always go back to suburbia if you feel the coast is still clear. Some possible guidelines would be: war in Syria or Iran, a banking holiday, if you see military troops in your town setting up check points.
Back in the day there was an old hippie bumper sticker that said, ?The Revolution Will Not Be Televised?. It is also true that CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS,MSNBC will NOT have a news flash that says ?Marshall law will be declared in 30 minutes, so if you're going to boogie, do it now!? Just remember, if you wait until there is clear unambiguous proof that it's time to go, you just might find yourself in a traffic jam and no further.

For transportation, a minivan is not going to get you any place safe enough. Consider getting something more robust, such as an older pick up truck (pre-95 is best ? simple electronics, less susceptible to EMP and solar flares) with an extend-a-cab or club-cab for the kids. The RV market has collapsed. Prices have never been lower on used RVs of all types. With a pickup truck you could get a cab-over camper quite inexpensively. These slip into the cargo area of a pick up. Most sleep 4 or more, have a toilet, shower, water storage tank, oven, range, sink, dining area a closet and cabinet space. With the economy the way it is, watching craigslist you will find great bargains. Most people are paying in the neighborhood of $500 for an older but still serviceable cab-over camper. If a pick up truck is just not something you can do, then you may want to consider a Coleman-type pop-up camper, which can be towed behind even some compact cars with ease (also about $500 on craigslist). You can use either type of camper to store everything you will need to take with you to your bug-out location, and you'll be able to just hook up and go when it's time, no need to think about what to bring. It's the ultimate ?bug-out-bag?. You can have hundreds of pounds of food and water and supplies in it, without having to crowd the supplies and the family into the minivan.

If the only water you have is a couple of cases, that won't do it. A case of water is about 2-1/2 gallons of water on average. How many cases can you carry? If you have a cab-over or pop-up camper, both have a fresh water tank to store in the area of 150-200 gallons of water. Check and see if the place you have chosen for your bug-out has any access to water ? lake, pond, stream, river, pump, well, etc. The average person, under Spartan conditions, can just get by on one gallon per day ? 2 quarts to drink and a couple of quarts for cooking and hygiene. Consider the water you'll need if your food is dehydrated or freeze-dried! So for 4 of you, with a 200 gallon water tank, you would have enough for about 50 days.

If all you have is freeze-dried or dehydrated items for food, you will want to have some items to supplement that, so that you don't experience appetite fatigue. We would suggest some of the following be added to your supplies for long-term evacuation:

Cocoa Powder
Sugar
Coffee/Tea
Cooking Oil
Flour
Popcorn
Spices
Dried Fruits
Nuts
Jerkey
Baking Soda
Vinegar
Molasses

Plus any family favorites, just to break the monotony.

Also, throw into your packing some board games, deck of cards, books, etc., toilet paper and RV toilet sanitizer (blue stuff). If you have extra jeans, socks, shirts, sneakers, shoes/boots ? the clothing you can be used outdoors with ease ? as well as toiletries should also be packed. Don't forget to include a first aid kit. For some of you it will be a military medic/field surgical kit, for others it will be some antiseptic and gauze and tape, depending on your skill level.

Scenario #2

1. You (and your family) are going to stay in your suburban home.
2. You have 6 cases of water
3. You have 6 cases of Dinty Moore Beef Stew and a few miscellaneous canned goods.
4. You have a shotgun
5. You don't want to tell your wife and kids what may be coming up in the near future because it will rock their world. Besides, they'll think I'm nuts.

In this scenario, there is no need to have a bug-out time definition. But you still need to know what to look for so that you know when to hunker down. So, again, some pre-defined conditions bear strong consideration. What to do, when such and such a thing happens, including a rendezvous place for children to meet you for picking up.

Food will be your biggest concern. Let's first deal with the ?having?. You'll need to have food. Basically, nothing different than the previous scenario, although not having to consider transportation, you can store more of it. More importantly, you'll need to be covert. Being in the suburbs means being around lots of people. Lots of hungry people. The smell of cooking can attract predators ? of all kinds: hungry neighborhood dogs and cats going feral, not to mention your neighbors, themselves, who undoubtedly are hungry. The smell of your cooking anything is going to bring people either knocking on or breaking down your door. What would you do if your kids hadn't eaten in a week and you smelled food?

Cooking hot food in the suburban environment could garner you a lot of negative attention. For these reasons, ready to eat foods (jerkey, dried fruits and vegetables, cookies and crackers) are most desirable. For some of you that might be military MREs. We don't recommend them as a steady diet ? too much GMO and MSG to name a few ? but in this case they may be useful against hunger while maintaining a low profile.

The power that pumps water to your house may well be disabled. That means that you will not have water coming from your faucet, nor to your toilet for flushing. The -Mart stores sell 5 gallon water bottles (like those used in water coolers) for about $5 each. Get yourself as many as you can, fill them and cover them up where you have your storage items. Refer to above scenario for daily requirements. Also, fill all your sinks and bathtubs with water while you still have power. Place a garbage bag over the sinks and bathtubs to keep the dust out of the water. Often times forgotten, your water heater has a spigot at the bottom of it, from which you can access the water in there as well ? usually anywhere from 20-40 gallons of additional, usable water.
Some rules about toilet water usage... ?If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.? Save the water from washing up (gray water) to use ? as little as possible ? to do the flushing. Pour it into the bowl until the ?brown goes down?. If you want to pour your gray water into your toilet tank, add rocks (too large to get into the flapper hole) or bricks into the tank so that they take up some of the unnecessary water space.

Now, for these scenarios, here is a lesson in ?How Not to Be Seen? (with a tip of the hat to Monty Python). For evacuation scenarios, if you are in a very secluded part of say, the National Forest or private land, it's a safe bet that if you encounter other people who are not part of your group, you will be encountering trouble. So my advice would be, ?if people move in, move out? and choose another camping sight.
Avoid having large, smoky fires that would attract others. Do most of your fireside cooking during the day and avoid night time fires completely. Also, avoid loud talking, loud music, etc. Don't think that because you can't see anyone around you, it's okay to play your Lead Zeppelin CDs at 800 decibels and no one would notice. You would be surprised how far sound travels in the wilderness, without car noises, people noises, etc., drowning it out.

For Surburban How not to be seen, use no night time lights, even if you have plenty of candles and flashlights. If you do need to illuminate something, do it discretely and for a short time, preferably in a room that has few windows. It's a good idea to put heavy drapes on your windows also, as long as there are no gaps. Avoid going outside and therefore being noticed. If you have a garage, put your car into it. A car parked outside lets others know there are people inside ? not what you want to do. The car battery can be used as a 12 volt power source if needed, and you can hook up a 110 AC power inverter as a house current power source.

?I don't want to tell the wife and kids what may be coming up in the future because I don't want to shake their world? Better to have them prepared than having to follow your instructions while they are in a panic. Like in the movie Knowing, when the little girl's mother panics, grabs the kids and drives madly toward a cave she knows (so does everyone else), it's not a good situation. It doesn't end well. Even if your family thinks you are a tin-foil-hat-wearing loon, if you have at least told them in advance what the trigger point would be, when that point arrives it will be that much less of a shock and they will be apt to be much more on board when the time comes. At some point they'll have to face it anyway. Better they be prepared than blissfully ignorant until that point.

Scenario #3

1. You (and your family) are already living at our survival retreat.
2. You are off the grid, self-sufficient and lovin' the life!
3. When TSHTF, it will just be another day.

Way to go!

From Plunder to Preservation: A Conference on Cultural Heritage, World War II, and the Pacific

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On November 8 and 9, archaeologists, historians, lawyers, veterans, and other experts will meet at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C. to attend the international conference, From Plunder to Preservation:?The Untold Story of?Cultural Heritage, World War II, and the Pacific.

Last year marked 70 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Now, a lifetime has passed since the United?States entered the Second World War on December 8, 1941.?This anniversary revived interest in World War II, and in particular, the Pacific Theater of Operations.?With 2012 also commemorating the Battles of the Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal, focus on the War in the Pacific will continue to increase this year.?

"This emphasis is welcome but belated," said Tess Davis, Executive Director of the Lawyers' Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation, which is organizing the conference. "The European Theater has long overshadowed its counterpart in the Far East. Despite its unfathomable atrocities, WWII in the West was the last of the so-called 'great' wars, with its front lines, conventional combat, and massive land campaigns.?It was a familiar horror, as it had been fought before many times, in some cases on the same battlefields, and even by many of the same men."

The?Pacific Theater ? with its Kamikaze suicide bombings,?guerrilla tactics,?and nuclear weapons ? was instead a harbinger of terrors to come.?A take-no-prisoners fight to the death through island jungles exotic to both the Americans and Japanese. Like the conflicts today in Afghanistan and Iraq, and earlier in Vietnam and Korea, it was a clash between East and West. And since?it was fought between civilizations, heritage was a major target, and thus a major casualty.?

"This cultural cost of the Pacific War, like its broader toll, has also been eclipsed by the devastation in Europe," said Davis.?"We have condemned the Nazi looting of art, mourned Monte Cassino's loss, reconstructed old Warsaw, applauded Holocaust restitution, and tended graves at Normandy. But what do we know of the Empire of Japan's systematic pillaging of Asian treasures from Mongolia to Singapore? Or the U.S. plan to first destroy ? and ultimately spare ? historic Kyoto? South Korea's efforts to recover its looted artworks? The neglect suffered by the cemeteries at Tarawa???Or the environmental time bomb of sunken battleships, and gravesites themselves, in pristine South Pacific?"

From Plunder to Preservation seeks to tell these stories. The conference is sponsored by the Lawyers' Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits will be available. To learn more and register, visit:?www.culturalheritagelaw.org/warinthepacific

Craft Supply Organization ~ * THE COUNTRY CHIC COTTAGE (DIY ...

I have started the task.? The task of straightening up my crafting area.? It is a monster of a task.? There is no guarantee I will come away from this alive.? But I do have a start.? I thought I would share things that work for me here in hopes that they will also work for you.? One thing I figured out this weekend is a great way to store baker's twine and washi tape.? Plus it is super simple....

I found these storage crates with holes at Walmart and brought them home cause they were cheap.? Then I realized I could use those holes for practical purposes.

I used a dowel rod that was a little longer than my container.? I actually used a vintage button glued on one end to be my "stopper".
I then threaded that through one end of my container.
I then added on my rolls of washi tape.? (More projects with this to come...my love and collection is growing by leaps and bounds lately.)
Then just thread the other end of the dowel rod through the opposite end of the container.? You do not have to secure this end as it stays put.? Also, your rolls are easily removable if there is nothing on this opposite end.?
At this point, I was thrilled to have washi tape that was looking organized!? But that container had tons of extra space.? I came up with another plan.
Adding my rolls of baker's twine to the sides was simple.? Plus....the bonus....you can thread the ends through the holes on the side for easy accessibility.? Now I am loving this storage....
So there you have it....my solution for washi tape and baker's twine.? A simple, yet useful, storage idea.
Have you organized any craft supplies lately?? I am in desperate need of more ideas y'all so leave me some links in the comments.
Thanks for stopping by!

Recovery and Continuity: The Distinction

March 10th, 2012

In the past couple of years there have been a large number of natural disasters causing untold amounts of damage, setting numerous companies back years if not decades. There is not much we can do to keep away from these disasters, but we can be ready for them. Is your company ready?

Most firms have at least basic protection from emergencies and disasters in spot. The most common types of protection are insurance coverage, server and pc backup, and basic preparations as required by law. Even though these protective measures are regarded as adequate for most organizations, there is still an opportunity a disaster will strike, leaving your organization in the lurch.

In the current months and years an rising quantity of occurrences, such as the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, have caused widespread disruption to organizations. To counter this, two enterprise initiatives have risen to the forefront: Disaster Recovery (DR) and Organization Continuity Planning (BCP). In truth, these two terms have grow to be widespread buzzwords, a quick world wide web search returns more than 53 million hits on organization continuity alone. The difficulty is that many experts are unclear on what every truly is. It is essential to be clear on each topic and the basic actions to take to be prepared for any disaster.

What is a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)? BCP, initial noticed throughout the Y2K scare of the late 90s, is a program that covers the way an organization prepares for and maintains all critical organization functions. BC organizing is comprised of activities that make sure upkeep, stability, and recoverability of service before, throughout, and right after a disaster. The program is typically set up on a day-to-day basis, and covers the entire organization.

It is important to have a BCP for your organization due to the fact if some thing takes place and you cannot deliver to your buyers, they will go to an additional company.

What is Disaster Recovery? Disaster Recovery is regarded as a part of the overall continuity program that focuses on the technical side of the business, which includes components such as information backup and recovery. Feel of BCP as an umbrella and DR is under the umbrella if you do not have a disaster recovery strategy, the general umbrella is far more or much less useless.

What Must be in Your DR and BCP Plans? These plans both share a quantity of similarities, normally following the very same actions involving the exact same elements. Each plans must consist of:

An operational program for a quantity of disasters that could happen in your geographical location. The plans really should cover occurrences as tiny as personal computer hardware errors and as huge as enormous natural disasters.
A succession plan for you or your leading management.
Education for substitute employees on essential tasks.
Cross coaching of your staff on the fundamentals of diverse roles so they will be in a position to take over if require be.
A communication plan focused on diverse crises, such as approaches of communicating if networks are down.
Off-site meeting locations for staff and managers.
A concentrate on safety. Foster partnerships and communication with neighborhood and emergency response services: Fire, Police, National Guard, Search and Rescue. Ideally, all personnel really should at least know standard initial aid. If you have personnel who are volunteer members of neighborhood Emergency Response Services, ask them to be responsible for teams.
Daily plans to backup your Enterprise systems, along with education and testing of recovery of systems.
Training and testing of all staff to practice recovery activities in scenarios as realistic as possible.

It is crucial that you conduct typical tests of your systems and processes, and make adjustments as essential. Be conscious that your business is constantly altering and so should your Business Continuity and Disaster Recover Plans. With a cautiously ready and practiced program, your business should be ready to face a range of disasters with minimal downtime. Now reading: Meet Sara Koffi: Badass Filmmaker in Perspectives on ...

Editor?s Note: We have treat for you today! Sara is trying to make a movie I think we?d all go see, she reached out to us to see if we?d help her share her plans with our readers. Of course we said yes.

Hi! My name?s Sara Koffi. I have a favorable relation with 80s music, a complicated relationship with iambic pentameter and I?m currently raising cash for the planned dramedy film, Class Dismissed. Sharp blue pencil on lined paper with space to place your message or text between the linesClass Dismissed is aiming to be an inclusive, genuinely diverse film that will serve as less problematic media to its Hollywood counterparts. The film focuses on the lives of Christy Taylor, a plus size escort and her roommate, Aubrey, an overachiever with some coming out to do. The story follows their lives a few days before Aubrey?s parents are due for a visit.

So, why did I want to create Class Dismissed?

It all goes back to those days in grade school when I was the brown girl with the notebooks.

Granted, all of the kids had notebooks but I had notebooks for notes and notebooks for writing various stories. I wouldn?t even allow myself to write in a notebook if it was already reserved for a certain idea. My writing madness was organized, a trait that seemed to slip away between senior year of high school and freshman year of college.

After my grade school years of school spelling bees (what other extracurricular could I possibly be involved in?) and poetry readings, I continued on with my need to write things down as I entered high school. The major difference between my grade school writing and my high school writing? I was a lot angrier with the world. I would?ve chalked it up to general teen angst, but I wasn?t just writing songs about boys and frenemies. I was making people a little uncomfortable with my embracing the word vagina in public spaces. I was talking about sexual experiences without shame between classes. I was calling out my classmates for their racist beliefs in the hallways and dealing with the consequences dealt out by teachers and staff.

I was letting out my frustration with how the world perceived me and women in general. Between my time spent staring at notebooks, I?d gotten into the lovely habit of investing a significant amount of time in TV and films. I?ll be the first to admit that I?ve always been in love with the magic surrounding Hollywood and its ability to give characters a life of their own. With that love, came an unsettling reality: Hollywood did not love me back. Women of color with my tone of skin and my size were often portrayed as loud and (don?t even make me say the word out loud) ?sassy.? Women in general ranged from emotionally dependent beings that had a problem existing sans a man or were ?bitches? for being serious about their careers and not interested in a man.

The unrequited love was a sad realization. Even sadder was the fact that Hollywood was purely a representation of the stereotypes the general public are comfortable with. It took me until my freshman year of college to seriously consider changing anything about the media. I began to work on stories with more diverse characters and tried to incorporate more serious topics into the discussion. That?s how Ships was born. Ships was my first stage play, revolving around the loves and lives of four college roommates. A lot of the principal cast was African-American, with the supporting roles needing to be filled by minorities. The cast even called for more women than men. Little did I know then that what I?d created was not going to be an easy sell (and it wasn?t an easy sell). I sat on my idea, feeling out of sorts, until a production offer came along from an angel on Earth.

But?I had to postpone production.

I know, I know. What kind of person waits around for their golden ticket then decides they?d rather just go home?

The same angry brown girl with the notebooks.

I wasn?t satisfied with what stage play would?ve been at. Sitting on my idea gave me the time needed to come up with an even better idea. Ships was just the beginning of what kind of media girls with notebooks could create. I decided that I wanted to make something that had even more less addressed themes, made even more definite statements and could be easily accessible to all kinds of people without needing to offend anyone with harmful stereotypes Hollywood style.

This is where Class Dismissed comes in.

Class Dismissed aims to be a consciously created media example of the types of films that should exist in 2012. I always describe it as part comedy, because there?s no possible way for me to write a story about college kids that doesn?t involve the absurd. Making the film a comedy is about connecting with people whose laughter may get cut off too often when a negative stereotype comes on the screen. I wanted people to have something to revel in without that anxious feeling. It has dramatic elements in it, too, because while I do love making people laugh, there are serious issues that the general media enjoys brushing over or attempts to personify in a character (see: Straw Feminist).

My main goal with this project is to make a statement. I believe you can be funny, memorable and insightful without needing to drag out stereotypes. I believe that counter media is still very much needed, even in the 21st century, to combat the negative messages people get every day about themselves from 30 second commercials. I believe that with enough creators and artists and innovators out there with a similar message, there can be a shift in the mainstream media or at least a safe alternative. People shouldn?t have to accept being the punch line, even if it?s for the sake of entertainment.

If you?d like to check out the project or spread the word:

Thanks for reading!

Peace and love,

Sara Koffi

HTC Proto goes under spycam, reveals secret identity: the Desire X

DNP HTC Desire X

It seems the newest member of HTC's mid-range smartphone line-up -- previously known as the Proto -- is actually the Desire X, according to several Scandinavian retailers (see coverage). Also, Hong Kong blog ePrice, who gave the new model the blurrycam treatment, claims that the specs line up with all the rumors: a 4-inch, 800 x 480 display, Android 4.0 with Sense 4.0, Beats Audio, dual-core 1Ghz processor and 5-megapixel camera. HTC should formally out the phone this week at IFA, but its European presence and similarity to the China-only New Desire V means it's likely an international version -- without the continental sticker shock.

Study questions recommendation to discontinue LABA therapy in asthma patients

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? An extensive literature review and analysis of five clinical trials suggests that discontinuing long-acting ?2-agonist (LABA) therapy in adults and older children who have asthma that is controlled with a combination of inhaled corticosteroids and LABAs may be associated with increased asthma-related impairment, according to a report published in Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication released Aug. 27.

Thomas Casale, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of Allergy/Immunology, Creighton University, served as a primary author of the paper. Currently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that once asthma is controlled, LABA be withdrawn because of safety concerns.

"Our evidence suggests that such an action could result in increased asthma-associated impairment. At a minimum there is a lack of studies evaluating the issue," said Casale.

A LABA step-off regimen appeared to increase asthma impairment, with worse Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire scores; worse Asthma Control Questionnaire scores; and fewer symptom-free days, according to study results.

Authors recognize that there is a FDA mandate for LABA safety studies by manufacturers of these agents but results won't be available for about five years.

"Our analysis supports the positive effects of LABAs for achieving and maintaining asthma control," Casale added.

Ashwin hopes India continues winning performance

Hyderabad, Aug 26

Ravichandran Ashwin is pleased over India starting the season with a victory against New Zealand in the first cricket Test and hopes the team would continue to perform in the same vein.

Aswhin, who was Man-of-the-Match for his 12/85, noted that the team had a tough last year.

"As a whole the team had a tough year but it happens with every team. We have put that behind. We are starting on a good note, hoping to continue and have a great season," he said after India defeated New Zealand by an innings and 115 runs here Sunday.

He said he was happy to have the best figures by any Indian bowler against the Kiwis.

"I don't get too bogged down with individual performances even if it is great or even if it is bad. It's a good start. The pressure is off my bag. I can enjoy myself and just let the ball do the talking, just look at various things that I have to be working on constantly."

The off-spinner pointed out that when New Zealand toured India last time they batted well and almost drew the series. "As this is not a venue where we won the last time so we came with a lot of apprehensions but at the end of the day I think we did very well as a unit to win the test match in four days."

Ashwin believes the contest in the second test at Bangalore would be stiffer as the Kiwi batsmen would come up with better plans.

He said the wicket at Hyderabad was very good. "I enjoyed the wicket a lot. There was enough in it for the bowlers and it was a very good batting wicket as well," he added.

He said Indian bowlers stuck to their basics when McCullum and Williamson were batting.

"We realised that we had to stick to our basics. We have to take one wicket at a time. When two batsmen are going good, it becomes tough for bowlers to dislodge them. You have to be patient. Once that one or two wickets fall it becomes much more easier because the new batsman has to move his feet around, put his technique in place. You can be really attacking at that point of time," he said as New Zealand were bowled out for 164 in the second innings from 98 for one.

Ashwin described Jeetan Patel's first innings dismissal and Ross Taylor's second inning dismissal as his best.

"It happened in first class match of my career. I don't remember after that," he said when asked about New Zealand captain's dismissal in second innings. Taylor was clean bowled when he left a ball which spun in and uprooted the bails.

Solid State Quantum Computer Finds 15=3x5 — 48% of the Time

Nah, as others have pointed out, what you do is run the Shor's algorithm, then verify it. If it's wrong, run Shor's again. If it's right, you know you have the factorization. In this way, you can be 100% sure that you've correctly solved the problem, even if Shor's only provides the correct answer some percentage of the time.

What I don't fully understand is why 48% makes this impractical. Having not read TFA, the only way I can imagine that would be the case is if somehow not having exactly a 50% chance

Isaac threatens to overshadow U.S. Republican convention

TAMPA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac menaced the U.S. presidential election campaign on Sunday, forcing Republicans to make changes to their national convention in Tampa, Florida, where party officials scrambled to make sure candidate Mitt Romney's message to voters does not get blown off course.

The storm was now forecast to hit land midweek, possibly even blasting into New Orleans at hurricane strength on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina - which might hurt the party's effort to get out its message more than if it had hit Tampa Bay directly as originally predicted.

Expecting earlier that Tampa would be in Issac's sights, convention organizers had canceled Monday's opening events and tried to squeeze as many speakers and activities into three days as had been planned for four.

Republicans this week are to formally nominate Romney and vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan as their candidates to face President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in the November 6 election.

"It's a concern ... competing with a major weather event," Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said on ABC's "This Week." Still he said he expected independent voters particularly will tune in to hear Romney and Ryan speak. "I think we'll still get a fair amount of attention, and the message will be good."

"We're going to tell the Mitt Romney story, we're still going to prosecute the president on what he promised, what he delivered, and why we think we need to save this country and put Mitt Romney in the White House," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said on CNN.

The Republican convention, just like the Democrats' similar gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, early next month, is typically a celebratory event bringing together thousands of party activists from across the United States for a week of speeches, partying and strategizing.

But the Republicans, now faced with a potential natural disaster along the same Gulf Coast that saw 1,800 people killed and billions of dollars in damage from Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, will have to temper any celebrations with concern for those affected by Isaac.

The importance of the convention for Romney cannot be overstated. Running either even with Obama or slightly behind him, Romney needs a bounce in the polls from the convention.

His challenge is to convince Americans that he is a viable alternative to the incumbent Democrat, and his big week, culminating with a speech on Thursday, needs as few distractions as possible. Media focused on howling winds and storm surges in another part of the country will make his task more difficult.

He enters convention week having made a self-inflicted error by telling a crowd in Michigan "no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," a joke that rekindled a storyline from conservatives over whether Obama was actually born in the United States.

Romney tried to get the focus on what he considers the paramount issue in the campaign, the weak U.S. economy, telling Fox News he and Ryan would offer "big and bold answers."

"America needs that kind of help at a time when so many people are out of work or underemployed or having a hard time making ends meet," he said in remarks broadcast on Sunday.

Fueled by warm Gulf waters, Isaac is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds and landfall was likely to come midweek somewhere between Florida and Louisiana, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

The storm expected to be at or near hurricane force when it swept across the Florida Keys by Sunday evening, the NHC said. A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach a minimum of 74 miles per hour. At least six people were killed when it moved across Haiti.

SAFETY FIRST

Party officials were working with Florida state officials and emergency management to ensure the safety of everyone attending the convention. Although it may move ashore to the west, heavy winds and rain can stretch hundreds of miles out from the storm's center.

A Lynyrd Skynyrd concert planned for Sunday night was canceled due to the likely severe weather, although performances by Trace Adkins, Kid Rock and Journey were moving ahead as scheduled.

The Republican convention will bring 50,000 visitors to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, home to well over 4 million people. Over the last few days, local authorities have said they could handle the crowds and the approaching storm.

Many attendees booked earlier flights to be in place before any bad weather. Hotels said they were ready to shift party schedules or move outdoor events indoors.

The last Republican convention, in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2008 was also delayed a day due to a storm. That year, Hurricane Gustav hit the Louisiana coast as the convention was set to nominate Senator John McCain as the Republican nominee.

The party, still reeling from criticism of Republican President George W. Bush's handling of devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rushed to delay the meeting out of respect for Gustav's victims.

Convention president Bill Harris said the party was ready operationally for events in Tampa to begin but they were acting out of an "abundance of caution" because of the uncertainty of the weather.

"I want to make sure everyone who attends the convention is safe and everyone who lives in Florida is not unnecessarily injured by any activities taking place when a storm threatens," Harris said.

Biden, who had planned to visit Florida during the convention but who had already canceled his Tampa event because of the storm has decided to also cancel his other events in Orlando and St. Augustine.

RPG Newbie (it rhymes!)

Howdy all!

So, I'm new to this community. My RP background is mostly old AOL related though I figure I'll attempt to transition to a new medium. I do miss my role plays!

Regarding my availability, honestly, I'm not sure what it'll be these days as I'm switching to a new job shortly that, I believe, is going to offer me much better flexibility than my old one. We can discuss times though!

And then, finally, my interests.
- Final Fantasy-related (that is, borrow the setting, play original characters :D)
- Medieval/Fantasy
- Pretty much any time period with some non-ordinary details added to it!

So, uh, yeah! That's that!

Refinery blast kills 24 in Venezuela, 86 hurt

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire Saturday, killing at least 24 people and injuring more than 80 others in the deadliest disaster in memory for the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet its domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released from the hospital.

Officials said those killed included a 10-year-old boy, but that most of the victims were National Guard troops stationed at the refinery.

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said the authorities were "trying to save the greatest number of lives."

Officials said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where clouds of dark smoke were billowing at daybreak.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the state oil company should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We have sufficient supplies... in the entire country, and our production at the maximum to deal with any situation in our domestic market," Ramirez said. "In that sense, we won't have major effects."

An official of the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Ramirez said. An adjacent National Guard post was severely damaged by the blast, he said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said. "The blast wave was of a significant magnitude."

Images in the early hours after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky. One photograph showed an injured man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

"The areas that had to be evacuated were evacuated," Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo said on television, according to the state-run Venezuelan News Agency. "The situation is controlled. Of course there's still a fire rising very high, but ... the specialists tell me there is no risk of another explosion."

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to investigate the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor also was assigned to lead the investigation. Troops were deployed to the area.

Ramirez said that nine storage tanks were damaged. He said supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery, and that the fire had been brought under control, though the flames would continue to burn up fuel in some of the tanks.

"At this time, the situation is controlled," Jaua said on television, while smoke continued to billow from the refinery.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

While the cause of Saturday's disaster remained unclear, some critics of President Hugo Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company known as PDVSA.

"This tragedy is probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years. Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," said Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former executive of PDVSA. Considering that record overall, Coronel said, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management."

Deadly accidents also occurred in Venezuela's oil and natural gas industry in the past. In 1993, a natural gas pipeline exploded beneath highway in Las Tejerias, engulfing a passenger bus and cars. Officials said 36 people were killed.

On Saturday morning, Ramirez said the explosion occurred in an area of the refinery where storage tanks are located. On television, he showed an aerial map of the rows of tanks where the flames raged.

"All of the events happened very quickly," he said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."
