West scolds Putin over Syria before G8 meeting

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland (Reuters) - Western leaders criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting Syria's Bashar al-Assad in his battle to crush a two-year-old uprising, setting the stage for what could be a difficult meeting of world leaders over Monday and Tuesday. British Prime Minister David Cameron, who chairs the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, acknowledged there was "a big difference" between the positions of Russia and the West on Syria. Moscow said it would not permit no-fly zones to be imposed over Syria.

Striking workers face off with police in Turkish capital

ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish riot police backed by water cannon faced off with around 1,000 trade union workers in the capital Ankara on Monday, after a weekend of some of the worst clashes since anti-government protests erupted late last month. Police officers used megaphones to order workers to stop their march towards Ankara's central Kizilay district.

Russia says it will not allow Syria no-fly zones

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, will not permit no-fly zones to be imposed over Syria, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Monday. "I think we fundamentally will not allow this scenario," Lukashevich told a news briefing, adding that calls for a no-fly zone showed disrespect for international law.

Rohani hopes all countries will use chance of friendly ties

DUBAI (Reuters) - President-elect Hassan Rohani said on Monday he hoped the world would grasp a new opportunity for "constructive interaction" with Iran and pledged to be more transparent about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program in order to see sanctions lifted. But he said Tehran was not ready to suspend its enrichment of uranium, which the West fears is aimed at producing a nuclear weapons capability - something Iran denies. "That period has ended," he said.

Protests to give new turn to Egypt revolution

CAIRO (Reuters) - Does Egypt face a new revolution? Millions hope so, it seems; they have signed a national petition demanding the president resign and plan to take to the streets on June 30, when Mohamed Mursi marks a year in office.

Pope Francis meets Venezuelan President Maduro

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis met Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday for the first time since Maduro won a narrow and disputed election victory to succeed late Socialist leader Hugo Chavez. The men discussed poverty, the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking, and regional issues including a dispute between Venezuela and Colombia, a statement from the Vatican said.

Bulgarian PM vows transparency on security chief issue

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's prime minister pledged on Monday to seek wide public support in picking a new head of state security after street protests forced the two-week old Socialist-led government to ditch its original candidate. Thousands of Bulgarians rallied to demand the government's resignation after it named a powerful media figure to the highly sensitive post without debate, a move critics said showed the lack of transparency in the European Union's poorest country.

South Africa's Mandela 'doing very well': daughter

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president Nelson Mandela, who is being treated in hospital for a lung infection, is "doing very well", his daughter said on Monday. The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader, who became South Africa's first black president in 1994, was rushed to hospital early on June 8 with a recurring respiratory infection.

Montreal mayor arrested by anti-corruption squad-reports

TORONTO (Reuters) - Montreal's new mayor, who pledged to stamp out corruption at City Hall when he took office late last year, was arrested by Quebec's anti-corruption police squad on Monday, numerous Canadian media outlets said. Michael Applebaum, the French-speaking city's first anglophone mayor in more than a century, was arrested at his home early Monday morning by the Unite permanente anticorruption (UPAC), a police spokeswoman told the La Presse newspaper and other media outlets.

Iranian vote unlikely to change nuclear policy: Israel's Netanyahu

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Iran's election showed popular discontent with the Tehran government but was unlikely to bring about any change in nuclear policy. "The Iranian election clearly reflects deep disaffection of the Iranian people with its regime, but unfortunately it doesn't have the power to change Iran's nuclear ambitions," Netanyahu told Reuters in an interview.

Apple releases statement on 'Customer Privacy', received over 4,000 government information requests in six months

Following the likes of Facebook, Apple has publicly responded to the explosion in interest in the NSA's PRISM program, and has been authorized to reveal some of the data on what it's shared with the US government in the past. It apparently first heard of the program when the media started to ask about it earlier this month and has reiterated that it provides no government agency with direct access to its servers. It does, however, get its fair share of requests for customer data from US law enforcement, receiving between 4,000 and 5,000 of them between December 1 2012 and May 31 2013. These requests covered over 9,000 accounts or devices, and come from federal, state and local authorities. Apple elaborated a little on these information requests too, saying that the majority of these requests have involved searching for missing children, preventing suicides and robberies. The company says it has "always placed a priority on protecting our customers' personal data," and its legal team evaluates each request. Apparently, Apple can't decrypt (and thus share) iMessage and FaceTime data, which is encrypted end-to-end. We've added its full statement after the break.

Two killed in mortar attack on Iranian dissident camp in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two people were killed in a mortar attack on an Iranian dissident camp in the Iraqi capital on Saturday, police sources said.

The Mujahadin-e-Khalq (MEK) group said a further 40 people were wounded in the attack, which follows one in February that killed at least five of its members.

MEK, which was removed from the U.S. State Department's official list of terrorist organizations last year, calls for the overthrow of Iran's clerical leaders and fought on Iraq's side during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

It is seeking to recast itself as a mainstream Iranian opposition force but is no longer welcome in Iraq under the Shi'ite-led government that came to power after U.S.-led forces invaded and toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is close to Shi'ite Iran and leans on Tehran for political support at home and in the wider Sunni-dominated region, where he has few friends.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but an MEK spokesman said circumstantial evidence pointed to Iran, with Iraqi complicity.

"They (the Iranian regime) are the main suspect," the spokesman said. "They have to have some cooperation from Iraqi forces and the government."

The attack struck the group's base in the former U.S. military compound "Camp Liberty" in western Baghdad, where most of the group was relocated by Iraqi authorities last year from a base given to them by Saddam.

"At around 11:30 a.m. around five mortar rounds landed in and near the Iranian camp in western Baghdad, killing two Iranian persons and wounding more than 17," said a police source at Baghdad airport, which is near the camp.

The United Nations intends to process members of the group for refugee status in other countries, but they have complained that conditions at Camp Liberty are poor and that they have not been permitted to bring many personal belongings.

In a statement condemning Saturday's attack, U.N. envoy Martin Kobler said he was "deeply concerned" by the incident, which occurred despite repeated requests to the Government of Iraq to provide Camp Liberty and its residents with protective walls and other defenses.

Turkish police crack down on revival of protests

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkish riot police on Sunday sprayed tear gas and water cannons at demonstrators who remained defiant after authorities evicted activists from an Istanbul park, making clear they are taking a hardline against attempts to rekindle protests that have shaken the country.

Bulldozers cleared all that was left of a two-week sit-in and police sealed off the area to keep demonstrators away from the spot that has become the focus of the strongest challenge to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his 10 years in office.

Protesters set up barricades and plumes of tear gas rose in Istanbul's streets on Sunday after Turkish riot police rousted the group who had vowed to stay in Gezi Park despite Erdogan's warnings to leave.

In Istanbul, police battled protesters in side streets off the park and beyond. In Ankara, the capital, police dispersed hundreds who tried to hold a memorial service for an activist who died of injuries sustained in a nearby police crackdown nearby on June 1.

In Saturday's raid at dusk, hundreds of white-helmeted riot police swept through the park and adjacent Taksim Square, firing canisters of the acrid, stinging gas. Thousands of peaceful protesters, choking on the fumes and stumbling among the tents, put up little physical resistance.

The protests began as an environmental sit-in to prevent a development project at Gezi Park, but have quickly spread to dozens of cities and spiraled into a broader expression of discontent about what many say is Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian decision-making. He vehemently denies the charge, pointing to the strong support base that helped him win third consecutive term with 50 percent of the vote in 2011.

As police cleared the square, many ran into nearby hotels for shelter. A stand-off developed at a luxury hotel on the edge of the park, where police opened up with water cannons against protesters and journalists outside before throwing tear gas at the entrance, filling the lobby with white smoke. At other hotels, plain-clothes policemen turned up outside, demanding the protesters come out.

Some protesters ran off into nearby streets, setting up makeshift barricades and running from water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets.

As news of the raid broke, thousands of people from other parts of Istanbul gathered and were attempting to reach Taksim. Television showed footage of riot police firing tear gas on a highway and bridge across the Bosphorus to prevent protesters from heading to the area.

As the tear gas settled, bulldozers moved into the park, scooping up debris and loading it into trucks. Crews of workmen in fluorescent yellow vests and plain-clothes police went through the abandoned belongings, opening bags and searching their contents before tearing down the tents, food centers and library the protesters had set up in what had become a bustling tent city.

In Ankara, at least 3,000 people swarmed into John F. Kennedy street Saturday night, where opposition party legislators sat down at the front of the crowd facing the riot police ? not far from Parliament. In Izmir, thousands converged at a seafront square.

Near Gezi, ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals as police set up cordons and roadblocks around the park, preventing anyone from getting close.

Tayfun Kahraman, a member of Taksim Solidarity, an umbrella group of protest movements, said an untold number of people in the park had been injured ? some from rubber bullets.

"Let them keep the park, we don't care anymore. Let it all be theirs. This crackdown has to stop. The people are in a terrible state," he told The Associated Press by phone.

Taksim Solidarity, on its Web site, called the incursion "atrocious" and counted hundreds of injured ? which it called a provisional estimate ? as well as an undetermined number of arrests. Istanbul governor's office said at least 44 people were taken to hospitals for treatment. None of them were in serious condition, it said in a statement.

Huseyin Celik, the spokesman for Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, told NTV that the sit-in had to end.

"They had made their voice heard ... Our government could not have allowed such an occupation to go on until the end," he said.

It was a violent police raid on May 31 against a small sit-in in Gezi Park that sparked the initial outrage and spiraled into a much broader protest. While those in the park have now fled, it was unclear whether they would take their movement to other places, or try to return to the park at a later time.

The protests, which left at least four people dead and more than 5,000 injured, have dented Erdogan's international reputation and infuriated him with a previously unseen defiance to his rule.

Saturday's raid came less than two hours after Erdogan threatened protesters in a boisterous speech in Sincan, an Ankara suburb that is a stronghold of his party.

"I say this very clearly: either Taksim Square is cleared, or if it isn't cleared then the security forces of this country will know how to clear it," he told tens of thousands of supporters at a political rally.

A second pro-government rally is planned in Istanbul on Sunday.

According to the government's redevelopment plan for Taksim Square that caused the sit-in, the park would be replaced with a replica Ottoman-era barracks. Under initial plans, the construction would have housed a shopping mall, though that has since been amended to the possibility of an opera house, a theater and a museum with cafes.

On Friday, Erdogan offered to defer to a court ruling on the legality of the government's contested park redevelopment plan, and floated the possibility of a referendum on it.

Samsung Intensity III (Verizon Wireless)

Smartphones are great, but let's face it, data plans are expensive. Not everyone wants to shell out that much cash every month, and there are still some people that just don't need it. The $49.99 Samsung Intensity III is for them. It's an old school feature phone?with a slide-out keyboard that's sure to please texting fans, and it doesn't require a monthly data plan. Try not to expect too much from it and you should be pleased.

Design, Call Quality, and Interface
The Intensity III meets military specification 810F except for rain, icing, and immersion. So you can't get it wet, but the phone can handle dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperature, and humidity, which makes it a lot more durable than the average device.

The design, for better or worse, is a classic slider phone. The Intensity III measures 4.41 by 2.12 by 0.57 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.06 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, with a textured back panel and a rubberized band around the middle. The sliding mechanism feels stable and the phone feels comfortable in your hand.

The 2.4-inch display is slightly larger than you typically find with this form factor, and the 320-by-240-pixel resolution looks decent. Unfortunately, Samsung has chosen an ultra-reflective panel with a nearly zero-degree viewing angle. You really need to hold this phone in the exact right spot every time to see the display properly, which is annoying.

When you slide the phone open, you gain access to a four-row QWERTY keyboard. I like the dedicated row of number keys at the top, and the backlit keys are decently spaced. It makes it much easier to type out text messages than using the number pad. The only thing I don't like is the Space bar, situated between the V and B keys. It makes for an awkward typing experience whenever you need to hit a key on the bottom row.

On the front, the number pad features large, very well-spaced keys that are easy to press. The control pad above it is similarly pleasant to use.

The Intensity III is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device with no 3G or Wi-Fi. Call quality is average. Voices come through the earpiece extremely clear, though they don't have much of a backbone. Calls made with the phone sound a little scratchy and noise cancellation isn't great. The earpiece gets very loud, and the speakerphone is powerful enough to hear outdoors. Calls sounded clear through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and the Nuance-powered voice dialer worked fine. Battery life was good at 7 hours of talk time.

Multimedia, Apps, and Conclusions
Don't confuse this with a smartphone, though multimedia support is a little better here than on some other feature phones. You get 99MB of free internal storage, and a side-mounted microSD card slot that worked with my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards. For music, the Intensity III was able to play MP3, M4A, and WMA files over both wired and Bluetooth headphones. It was also able to play H.264 and MPEG 4 video files, but only at resolutions up to 320 by 240.

Web browsing is powered by an Opera Mini 6 browser, which is pretty elegant, as far as feature phone browsers go. But the 2G data speeds are slow, the screen is small, and really, the whole point of getting this phone is so you don't have to pay for data in the first place.

You get a few basic apps, like an alarm, calculator, notepad, and stopwatch. You also get Verizon's VZ Navigator 6 for voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions, but it costs $0.99 for a day or $9.99 for a month. There's also email support for AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Microsoft Exchange, Verizon.net, Windows Live, and Yahoo accounts.

The 2.0-megapixel camera has no flash or auto-focus. Performance is okay for what it is, which is an extra feature attached to an inexpensive feature phone. Colors look a little washed out and there is absolutely no fine detail, but photos look decent enough if you don't enlarge them. You can also record video, which maxes out at a resolution of 320 by 240 and 15 frames per second. Again, you're getting what you pay for here.

The Samsung Intensity III isn't a very exciting phone, but it's a decent place for Verizon users that aren't in need of a smartphone to turn. It's Verizon's most capable messaging device, and far superior to the LG Cosmos 3, which, even though it's free, just isn't worth the trouble. If you don't require a keyboard, another good option is the LG Revere 2. It's a free, easy-to-use flip with good call quality.?

AP PHOTOS: Egypt's Sufis thrive despite attacks

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Sufi Muslims say their places of worship are under threat by rising radicalism, as shrines sacred to them are coming under attack by Islamist hard-liners who deem them heretical.

Sufis follow a mystical philosophy of Islam that has traditionally been popular in Egypt, with some 15 million people in the country of 90 million belonging to dozens of Sufi orders. Sufis say the figure is likely even higher since many who practice it are not registered with orders.

But many of their practices are denounced by ultraconservative Salafis who follow a more literal interpretation of Islam. In particular, hard-liners point to Sufis' reverence for saints and holy men and for the shrines where they are buried. Salafis and other hard-liners consider such reverence as idolatrous. And with hard-liners emboldened and given a freer hand since the 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, attacks on shrines have escalated.

The Secretary-General of the Union of Sufis in Egypt, Abdullah al-Nasser Helmy, says more than 100 attacks against shrines have taken place across the country in several Nile Delta provinces, the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria and northern Sinai Peninsula where radical extremists are active.

In the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweyid, for example, extremists bombed the shrine of the saint who gives the town its name. The tomb was not totally destroyed, so a few months later, they bombed it again. In other places, shrines have been defaced or damaged.

"Egypt is being severely affected by the Salafi ideology, which is hard-line and forces women to wear the face veil," said Helmy, expressing fears that extremists want to do away with all tombs related to prophets and religious figures.

Amr El-Mekky, an official in the Salafi Nour Party, said his party is against such attacks. "This is not the way of dealing with different people," he said. "We criticize anything like that," he said, adding that all Salafis should not be painted with the same brush.

Sufism is rooted in the focus on one's soul, nurturing it through prayer and dhikr, a ritual of supplication that often includes recitation of God's 99 names in Islam. Whirling dervishes who spin and pray with their hands stretched upward until they are lost in worship are also associated with Sufism.

One of the most popular Sufi rites is the mawlid ? a mass celebration to mark the birthdate of a saint. There are some 120 such commemorations a year in Egypt alone, with some Sufis traveling across the country and camping outside mosques and shrines for the occasions. The food they make is available for all to eat and their circles of worship open for all to join. As with many of Egypt's antiquities and ancient sites, many of the country's Sufi shrines are dilapidated and neglected by the government.

Sufism, which first appeared in Egypt in the 9th century, is popular among leading sheiks in Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world's oldest seat of learning based in Cairo.

Some Sufi parties emerged after the country's uprising, though Sufis have largely stayed on the peripheries of politics while Islamists plunged in to dominate politics. Salafis are now the second largest bloc in the interim parliament, after the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt's president, Mohammed Morsi, is a veteran of the Brotherhood.

Helmy says Sufis are concerned that the new government and Salafis are slowly trying to encroach on mosques and force out moderate scholars.

Still, he says it is not in the nature of Sufis to be politicized or be consumed by worldly problems.

"Sufis only tremble from God's majesty, though they are being fought by the current government," Helmy said.

Here's a gallery of images from AP photographer Hassan Ammar showing Sufi practices, rituals and places of worship in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Press updated with Feedbin and Feed Wrangler support, interface changes

PressPopular RSS reader Press rolled out an update on the Play Store today that added two new options for managing RSS feeds as well as new interface changes. Getting out in front of the planned Google Reader shutdown on July 1st, the latest update now supports both Feedbin and Feed Wrangler alongside the original Google Reader login option. Both of these options are paid ($2 per month for Feedbin, $19 per year for Feed Wrangler), but are a couple of the only viable options available as a Google Reader replacement at this point. Other leading options are Feedly, which Press indicates should be integrated before July 1st, and Fever, which is marked as "coming soon" to the app.

Press has also improved the interface, with better categorizing of feeds and some subtle changes to clean up the reading experience. The app is $2.99 in the Play Store and still stands as one of the best designed apps out there today. You can grab a download from the Play Store link above.

(AP Photo/El Nuevo Herald, David Santiago)

(AP) ? At their best in the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat have forced turnover after turnover, finding a gear the San Antonio Spurs just can't reach.

Play in Game 5 as they have during their two easy victories in the series, and LeBron James' defending champs will head home just one win away from another title.

But Miami's best hasn't been carrying over from game to game, not just in this series but for a while now. So it's anybody's guess what happens Sunday in a finals that's dead even, though the games haven't been.

"I think Game 5 should be the best game of the series," Dwyane Wade said. "Both teams should come out knowing each other, knowing what each other want to do, and it should be a very good game."

Not the way this series has been going.

Game 1 was a thriller, neither team able to build a double-digit lead over four back-and-fourth quarters before Tony Parker's clinching basket helped the Spurs pull out a 92-88 victory.

The teams haven't delivered a classic since. The Heat won by 19, lost by 36 and cruised by 16. The last few minutes of each have looked more like an October exhibition than a mid-June championship clash.

"You lose a game like we did in Game 2 and we come back and beat them in Game 3 and look like they looked last night, that's what drives me crazy, because as coaches you try to prevent that," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Friday during a conference call. Neither team practiced.

"You like to be on a little bit more of an even keel and perform the same way each night, and the only thing I can tell myself after all these years is, you're dealing with people, with emotions and not robots," Popovich said. "They come out and they all play hard, but there's that little intangible, that little spark of intensity or back against the wall, or a little bit of fear that just seems to kick in when you've lost the previous game. And when you find teams that can get over that, those are the championship teams."

It's the most uneven stretch of the NBA Finals since 2005, according to STATS, when San Antonio and the Detroit Pistons swapped four straight games decided by 15 or more points to open the series.

Back then, the Spurs could depend on Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to get them righted. But now Parker has a shaky hamstring, Ginobili's shot and confidence are even shakier, and San Antonio might need a throwback performance from Duncan in what could be his last home game in a storied finals career.

"If they don't get more from Tim Duncan, Sunday is the Spurs' last stand," Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said on NBA TV's postgame show.

Duncan knows that what the Spurs really need is to take better care of the basketball. Their 17 turnovers led to 19 Miami points in Game 2, and they gave the Heat 23 points with their 19 turnovers Thursday.

"That's a big problem," Duncan said. "When we lose, that's the big deal right there."

A healthy Parker would help. He started strong in Game 4 while playing with a strained right hamstring but couldn't maintain it in the second half. He's hoping the two-day break between games will strengthen his stamina.

"It's going to be huge for me," Parker said after the game. "Obviously, definitely got fatigued in the second half. Those two days I'm going to make sure I do a lot of treatment and to get 100 percent. Tonight, I was not 100 percent. By Sunday, that's my goal, to be good to go."

The Spurs can only help their Big Three looks as good as Miami's was on Thursday.

With 33 points and 11 rebounds from James, 32 points from Wade, and 20 points and 13 rebounds from Chris Bosh, the Heat rode the top-heavy balance that's supposed to deliver multiple titles to Miami.

But the team that sustained its excellence for 27 straight victories during the regular season hasn't even been able to do it for consecutive games lately. Double-digit victories in Games 3 and 5 of the Eastern Conference finals were followed by losses, as was their first victory in this series.

"Well, Game 5 is going to be a big game," Bosh said. "I think we just have to stay in the place that we're in."

As usual, that may depend on James. After taking unusually long to get going in Games 2 and 3, he was out quick Thursday, making it clear the game was not going to be played on the Spurs' terms.

"I gave it everything I had," James said. "I was just playing as hard as I could until the tank was empty and that's how it's going to have to be for the rest of this series."

Of the previous 27 times the finals were tied at 2-2, the Game 5 winner went on to take the series 20 times. The Heat lost in this situation two years ago in Dallas, and the Mavericks finished them off in Game 6 in Miami.

Wade has never gone the distance in his three previous NBA Finals, but kept mentioning Thursday that there were three games left, as if expecting this series to reach a Game 7.

The Heat could make that less likely with a victory Sunday.

"It's going to be hard, the hardest thing we're going to do as a group is to try to repeat," Wade said. "And this team over here is not going to quit, no matter what. So we have to prepare for their best effort."

Microsoft patent application details use of human bodies for inhuman data transmissions

DNP Microsoft patent application wants to use your body as a transmission channel

While we know the human body is capable of generating electricity, we never quite thought of it as a data transmission channel like this Microsoft patent application suggests. According to the document, the folks up in Redmond would like to be able to transfer information from one electronic device to another with a simple touch, as seen in the image above. It all sounds a little freaky, but the filing goes on to suggest a few practical uses. Instead of swiping a credit card or showing ID, you could use your own flesh to authenticate the purchase of goods or services. Another example is the ability to share contact information with someone just by shaking his or her hand, so long as he or she was also wearing a similar electronic device. While we hesitate to endorse such a technology, at least it's less invasive than embedding circuitry in our wrists. If you feel like plumbing the depths of this patent further, click on the source for more on what the software giant has in mind for the future.

Amazon offers Launch Edition PlayStation 4 for wealthy earlyadopters, instantly sells out

Can't bear the thought of someone else being disappointed by a launch-day title or a colossal firmware update? Amazon is offering a "Launch Edition" of the PlayStation 4, the only difference being that you're guaranteed to get the console on the day that it's launched. Of course, moneyed early-adopters have already cleaned the retailer out, but if you're that desperate to jump the queue, you can always keep hitting F5 in the hope it gets some more in.

Hudson good, but not good enough for Braves

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:41 a.m. ET June 12, 2013

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tim Hudson soon may need a new nickname - "Tough Luck" Tim.

In his last three starts, the Atlanta Braves' right-hander is 0-2 with a 1.66 ERA. In his last seven starts Hudson is 0-5, the second longest losing streak in his career.

Hudson (4-6) pitched well again Tuesday night, going 7 1-3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits, but was outdueled by Andrew Cashner and lost to the Padres, 3-2, for the first time after going 6-0 in 13 previous appearances and 12 starts against San Diego.

"I felt good," said Hudson, who struck out seven and walked one. "It was probably one of my top two or three games, stuff wise. I made a couple of bad pitches and somehow gave up three runs. They took advantage of them."

Cashner (5-3) pitched a career high eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out five and walking one. It marked the seventh straight time that he has pitched six-plus innings. At one point Cashner retired 10 straight batters after giving up one run and three hits in the first inning.

Luke Gregerson came on in the ninth and got the final out, striking out Dan Uggla for his third save in five opportunities.

The Padres have won five of seven, while the Braves have lost four of six.

Hudson said he made a good pitch to Nick Hundley in the second, but the Padres' catcher muscled a bloop double down the left field line that scored Kyle Blanks, who had walked, to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

One pitch he would like back was a hanging splitter that Chase Headley hit for a home run in the bottom of the first tying the game at 1-1.

The Braves had taken a 1-0 lead on Andrelton Simmon's leadoff single, a wild pitch and Freddie Freeman's RBI single.

Carlos Quentin produced the third Padres run in the third with an RBI single to left that scored Everth Cabrera, who had doubled to right leading off the inning.

The Braves closed within a run in the sixth when Jason Heyward and Justin Upton hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. Freeman then hit into a double play with Heyward scoring.

"Cashner throws 95, 96 and has a changeup that he can throw whenever he wants," Freeman said. "We got him there on the ropes in the sixth, but I grounded into double play and killed a rally. You have to take advantage of that and I didn't do it."

NOTES: The Padres placed OF Cameron Maybin on the 15-day disabled list. Maybin had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed a posterior cruciate ligament tear in his right knee, which he injured Sunday in Colorado. He is expected to be out six to 10 weeks. ... Padres closer Houston Street, who has been in the DL since May 30 with a strained left calf, will pitch at Single-A Lake Elsinore Wednesday. Padres manager Bud Black said the Street would pitch an inning and around 15 pitches. ... Braves third baseman Ramiro Pena, who missed Monday's game with a sore shoulder, was back in the starting lineup Tuesday. ... Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was still marveling at catcher Evan Gattis' pinch-hit home run Monday. He noted that in a TV replay they said that "the ball was hit so hard that the resin of the ball puffed up." He (Gattis) has a following like (Yasil) Puig, but he's had it much longer than Puig, who's had it for a week." Gonzalez said that Gattis would be in the starting lineup Wednesday, a day game after a night game. ... Braves RHP Paul Maholm (7-4, 3.46) will oppose Padres RHP Edison Volquez (4-5, 6.33) in the final game of the series.
