Awarded computer firms raise sales ? OnlyHardwareBlog

Dar es Salaam. Participating at last year?s Top 100 mid-sized survey has brought Mitsumi Computer Garage and Simply Computers many benefits, but the increased imports of counterfeit information technology hardware is one of the challenges they face in their businesses.

The benefits the two firms got since becoming one of the winners of the Top 100 survey include increased sales due to customers recognition as well as improved accounting and financial reporting standards.

The survey has also increased chances of access to finance. Top 100 mid-sized company survey is organised by KPMG Tanzania and The Citizen.

The general manager of Mitsumi Computer Garage Ltd Mr Kartik Shah says the local market ratio is currently 60:40 for fake and genuine ICT products both in software and hardware.

?There is much need to educate people about the two types of products in order to increase efficiency and develop the local market,? says Mr Shah who is information technology expert.

To avoid including the counterfeit computers in their stock, Mitsumi deals with major brands only like Toshiba, Dell, HP, Acer and Microsoft software only.

Government austerity measures, which have resulted in reduced spending in IT hardware and related accessories has also impacted the business because the state is the biggest customer on IT products.

The general manager of Simply Computers Mr Rizwan Jaffer says there is a decrease in procurement from the government, a situation the company and other ICT firms started to experience after the 50th anniversary.

According to Mr Jaffer, the situation continues to worsen as the national census approaches. ?We suspect that the government spent a lot of money to celebrate Tanzania?s fiftieth anniversary and now is expecting to spend again in the coming census in August.

If this is true, I don?t know what will happen in 2015 general election,? says Mr Jaffer.

Although the company sells in retail, it also serves corporate companies like banks, insurance firms and public institutions in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

?With the exception of the government case, the market is generally good and we don?t have any plan so far to expand outside the country. We have agents in almost all regions that ensure that our customers receive genuine brands,? Mr Jaffer says.

To help Top 100 survey companies to overcome such kind of difficulties the organisers of the survey have launched the Top 100 Mid-Sized Companies Club 2011 forum, which would be a platform for networking and sharing information. Top 100 survey companies would also get an opportunity to meet policy makers.

Simply Computers which is a direct partner to Dell, sells both laptops and desktop computers and other ICT equipment. As far as other winners are concerned, Simply Computers also confirms increasing service confidence from their clients after the Top 100 award last year.

?Our company is generally doing well as we maintain our existing customers and increase new ones. Top 100 Mid-sized Survey is a commendable job because it exposed us to clients and even connects us to various organisations,? says Mr Jaffer.

One of the objectives of the survey include creating industry databases and that would enable medium-sized companies to benchmark themselves against their peers as well as highlighting, to policymakers, their contribution to economic growth.

Mitsumi Group operates in East, West Africa and Middle East (Dubai).
It deals with distribution of various global IT hardware and software brands. It operates in 12 countries and there are plans to expand more.

Mr Shah commends the Top 100 survey in the country but advises to go sector-wise after getting to full list of 100 best companies.

?After having a list of 100 winners and the overall winner, the organisers can put us sector-wise so that we can understand who is leading in which sector. It?s good to challenge ourselves that way,? he says.

The company also shares the sentiment that transactions of ICT facilities with the government are still slow citing reports that the government has no money currently as it approaches the census this August

Top 100 Mid-sized Company survey is the first ever of its kind in the country to showcase business excellence. KPMG Tanzania and The Citizen launched recently the second round of the survey in Tanzania.

Get Hard Money for Smaller Real Estate Investments | Real Estate ...

Don't know where to get money for a small real estate investment?

Are you trying to find a hard money loan that will approve you for a smaller loan? Read the following article to find out where you can get smaller loans for smaller real estate investments. ?Get the details below

Are you a beginner in real estate investing or are you only interested in single family homes? Are you having difficulty in finding hard money lenders to fund your deal because it?s small? If your answer is ?yes?, then this article could be a great help??

There are so many real estate investors who have been struggling with finding hard money lenders that would be willing to lend to them.

One of the reasons to that is lot of real estate investors are dealing with properties that are fairly inexpensive i.e. loans that are under $ 50,000 or 30 or 40,000 dollars. But one of the things that they are finding is that most lenders don?t have an appetite for doing loans in that size.

They think that they are way too small. In some cases, the loans that are $ 100,000 are also way too small.

But there are hard money lenders like Do Hard Money, who are happy to do loans under 50 or 100,000 dollars. In fact, we don?t even have a minimum. We will do hard money loans as low as it make sense for you to pay the fees do it.

So, if you?ve been struggling with investment opportunities and seeing opportunities around you, come talk to us. We would be happy to work with you. We would be happy to do the loans. No minimums or whatsoever and that can enable you to do those types of properties.Personally, I think that those properties are fantastic. I think they are great way to start in real estate investing or they are even a great way to do lots of properties.

I have a friend in Mississippi, who specializes in these small, inexpensive homes. He typically buys properties for $ 20-30,000, fixes them up and sells them around at $ 60-65,000 depending upon the matter of the repairs that needed to be done.

What lots of real estate investors do is they overlook these smaller and inexpensive properties for bigger properties because they think there would be a lot of profit margin in them and sometimes there are.

But the problem you run into if you are talking about half a million dollar property, which may have a $ 100,000 worth of value or enough profit into it.

But one of the problems that you get yourself into is that as time goes on, you can actually that the value of the property of the value may actually be going down and your profits are going down with that.

One of the things is if a half million dollar home goes down by 10%, you are talking about $ 50,000. But if you talk about a $ 30,000 home going down by 10%, you are talking about $ 3000.

So, there?s a lot more to gain and there?s a lot less risk you take off the table as you will start looking at some of these lowering properties or less expensive properties as investment opportunities.Investors who are struggling with finding hard money lenders, we want to declare that we don?t have any minimums. We are happy to work with you. We work on single family houses and we will love to help all the real estate investors.

Katherine Jackson 'devastated' kids taken away

By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

Updated at 5:50 p.m. PT: LOS ANGELES --?Michael Jackson's three children were given a new guardian on Wednesday in an escalating power struggle within the famous musical family involving the singer's multimillion-dollar estate and the well-being of his elderly mother.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff gave temporary guardianship of the children to their cousin Tito Jackson Jr., 34, at his request, after a chaotic week of conflicting reports over the health and whereabouts of family matriarch Katherine Jackson.

Hours after Wednesday's court hearing, Katherine Jackson gave her first TV interview since the often wild and conflicting reports surfaced, denying she had been kidnapped by her adult children and saying she was devastated that Prince Michael, 15, Paris, 14 and Blanket, 10, "have been taken away from me."

Katherine Jackson, 82, who was appointed guardian of the kids in her son Michael's will, was reported missing and unreachable by granddaughter Paris last week.

She was later said by family members to be resting under doctor's order at the Arizona home of one of her daughters.

"There are rumors going around about me that I have been kidnapped," she told ABC News in the interview.

"I am here today to let everybody to know that I am good and fine ... My children would never do anything to me like that," she added.

Katherine Jackson said the court ruling that gave temporary guardianship to her grandson Tito was "based on a bunch of lies."

"I am devastated that while I've been away, my grandchildren have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home," she added.?

The family dispute broke into the open earlier this week in an angry confrontation, seen on security video, between Paris and her aunt, singer Janet Jackson, at the clan's large compound near Los Angeles.

Janet Jackson and four of her siblings are embroiled in a dispute over the validity of the will left by their brother Michael after his sudden death in 2009. The will placed his estate in the hands of two non-family executors.

At Wednesday's court hearing, attorneys for both Tito Jackson Jr. and Katherine Jackson raised questions over whether her absence from her Los Angeles home was voluntary.

Tito Jackson Jr., the son of Michael Jackson's older brother Tito, told Beckloff that he spoke on Tuesday to Katherine Jackson but that she was talking strangely and seemed to be speaking in code.

"I never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said. "I'd ask simple questions and she wasn't sharp."

Another brother, Randy Jackson, said on Twitter Wednesday that suggestions his mother was being held against her will were "absurd."

"Enough already!! We've already lost one family member," Randy Jackson tweeted, claiming the executors of his brother's estate were using the media to "spin their lies and divide our family."

Michael Jackson's will stipulated that money earned by the estate would benefit his mother and his kids. But Randy, Janet and three other siblings say the pop star's signature was forged and that he was not in California on the date it was signed.

The executors of the estate insist the will is valid and said earlier this week they were concerned about protecting the kids from "undue influences, bullying and greed."

Since Jackson's death, the executors have approved numerous projects including a posthumous concert rehearsal film "This Is It", a Cirque du Soleil show, and releases of new and old Jackson music and videos.

Music publication Billboard estimated in 2010 that the "Thriller" singer's estate generated about $1 billion in revenue in just the first year following his death from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol.

According to financial documents filed recently with a Los Angeles probate judge, the estate has earned $475 million in gross profits since Jackson's death, and much of the singer's estimated $500 million debt has been paid off.

Central African countries to monitor Congo forests

Ten Central African countries have agreed to take part in a regional initiative to monitor the Congo Basin, one of the world's largest primary rainforests, the UN's food agency said Thursday.

"A new regional initiative will help 10 Central African countries to set up advanced national forest monitoring systems," the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced.

The 10 countries are Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda and Sao Tome and Principe, it said.

The 200 million hectares (494 million acres) or so of forests are second only to the Amazon rainforest in size, supporting the livelihoods of some 60 million people.

"The main threats to these forests include land-use change, unsustainable logging and mining," the FAO said.

The monitoring project would be managed in conjunction with the Central Africa Forests Commission (COMIFAC).

"The rates of forest cover change and the subsequent emissions from deforestation ... remain poorly understood partly due to the lack of up-to-date, accurate information on the current state of forests in the region," it said.

The gross deforestation annual rate in the Congo Basin was 0.13 percent between 1990 and 2000, but it doubled in the period of 2000-2005, COMIFAC data showed.

The monitoring system was crucial to improving the protection of forests and sustainable management, the FAO's forestry expert Eduardo Rojas said.

The agency said it would provide remote sensing technologies to so the countries can estimate forest cover and track changes, as well as estimate the amount of carbon stocks their forests contain.

Open Your Mind To New Music With Sonarflow For Itunes

Sonarflow (http://www.sonarflow.com), a new iPhone and iPad app to discover new

music, harmonizes perfectly with the personal music library in iTunes and the musical

universe of about 28 million songs at the Apple iTunes Store (http://itunes.apple.com/

en/app/sonarflow-itunes-visual-music/id382049291?mt=8).

With its visual and intuitive user interface, Sonarflow iTunes offers a new, list-free

view of your music collection. The App is also the perfect tool to discover previously

unknown music on iTunes: the majority of the current 28 million songs in iTunes lead a

life well below the popular mainstream perception. In "Discovery Mode" you will be able

to tap into this rich music source as Sonarflow recommends artists and songs based on

your personal music taste. Sonar Flow for iTunes is available in a free version and in

an ad-free Pro version for 1.59 in Apples iTunes Store.

In todays digital age, music lovers are confronted with a luxury problem. How do you

filter out music you like from the sheer endless supply of songs and albums out there?

A challenging task: 28 million songs are waiting out there to be discovered on iTunes,

other providers such as the streaming service Spotify (for which Sonarflow has recently

released a separate free app for premium users) offers close to 18 million songs in the

cloud.

Find music in Sonarflows discovery mode

Sonarflow helps to discover music using either its intuitive visual representation of

the users personal iTunes music library or switching to "Discovery Mode":music is

presented on iPad and iPhone using bubbles. The alignment of the bubbles visualises

the proximity of the different music styles to another, the colour of each bubble

represents the music-genre.

The musical journey through the personal music library starts in the genre overview. If

you zoom into a bubble, it displays the several artists. One level below, you will find the

albums of these artists. If you activate the "Discovery Mode", Sonarflow will cross the

boundaries of your iPhone or iPad. The App will now recommend appropriate music,

which it finds in the iTunes universe. Sonarflow will now find new music in the depths

of the music universe, limited only by your personal state of mind. New music can be

listened to in Sonarflow for 30 seconds before you decide to buy.

"Lists simply fall short of the almost infinite variety of the iTunes music catalogue. The

colourful Sonarflow Bubbles are much better suited for discovering new music, as they

enable the user to zoom in and open up more and more music levels. Sonarflow for

iTunes unlocks a whole new musical universe in an intuitive and interactive way", says

Thomas Lidy, CEO of Spectralmind, the company behind Sonarflow.

What makes Sonarflow iTunes so special?

- The iTunes music library is presented in an intuitive graphical interface. With zoom
and swipe you can browse through music on many levels, displayed in coloured
bubbles.

- Without Sonarflow and its Discovery Mode, the majority of the 28 million iTunes
songs would most likely remain undiscovered.

- Sonarflow departs with the one dimensional level (Genre) and extends it with three
others (Artist/Album/Song). Searching for music is substantially refined and song
proposals become more specific.

- After finding appropriate music, play them immediately and create playlists by
simply double-tapping on one of the bubbles.

- Share songs on Facebook, Twitter and via e-mail.

Rumor: Microsoft Knuckles down On Windows Phone 8, Cancels Employee Vacations

While we are eagerly waiting for the Windows Phone 8 info, Microsoft Windows Phone team is ramping up its development of Windows Phone 8 for the release later this year.

According to the latest rumor, Microsoft considered that the recent Windows Phone 8 builds are buggy and to fix those bugs they are even cancelling the vacations of employees to meet the Windows Phone 8 development schedule.

On Reddit Technopwn and Libertarianish posted:

technopwn 1 day ago

I also have a few friends that work on WP, and can confirm this is correct. Although you should also ask your friends how they think WP8 is going ? mine say its incredibly buggy still.

Libertarianish 1 day ago

From what I could tell both the test phone running WP8 and the Lumia 900 running 7.8 ran smoothly and without a hiccup. I never touched them but I was shown the new start screen and a few new apps like Xbox Music. They ran without any lag, which was a relief because my Gen 1 phone lags with every app. I could not see any more UI changes like multiple screens, multicolored tile themes, or gradient/colorful backgrounds; but that doesn?t mean anything concrete. Also, it had the three capacitive touch buttons which functioned properly, so a charms bar in WP8 is unlikely.

As far as buggy, I know Microsoft was planning on an earlier release, like summer, but it was delayed. The employees that I know even cancelled their vacations. I expect October to be the likely time of release. September or November may still be up for consideration.

When we asked Microsoft to comment on this rumor, we got the usual reply as follows,

We?re looking forward to delivering Windows Phone 8 with our partners later this year.

The context for all of these posts are however that a Windows Phone 8 has been spotted out in the wild, which just makes it a question of time before we see every detail of the new OS leaked.

Whatever happens, I would like to see Windows Phone 8 devices on market as soon as possible. In October maybe?

(AP Photo/Denver Post, RJ Sangosti, Pool)

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? James Holmes spent a year in a small neuroscience doctoral program, surrounded by scientists and roughly three dozen classmates delving into the inner workings of the brain.

The University of Colorado, Denver, isn't saying if they had any warning signs.

Experts say, however, the intimacy of the program and its focus on the brain may not have been enough for staff and students to detect that Holmes was on a course that police say ended with a deadly rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.

Supported by a prestigious federal grant, Holmes, 24, was in the first year of a program at the Anschutz Medical Campus dedicated to neuroscience, studying such topics as how the brain works or malfunctions or helping develop drugs to treat epilepsy and other disorders.

But it is not behavioral science or psychology, experts say.

David Eagleman, who runs the Initiative on Neuroscience and the Law at Baylor University, said some neuroscientists are experts in mental illnesses and aberrant behavior, but others spend most of their time studying molecular chemistry.

"It's really only a fraction of professors" who could identify a simmering mental disorder, Eagleman said. "Many people in neuroscience are not specialized in the issue of picking up mental illness ... There are plenty of people who just study mice and cats and stuff like that."

Holmes is accused of methodically stockpiling weapons and explosives at work and at home that police say he used to kill 12 people and wound 58 more at a movie theater Friday in nearby Aurora. Police say he also booby-trapped his apartment with the intent to kill police officers.

Holmes' arraignment hearing is on Monday.

Attention continued to focus on victims of the attack and their grieving families, many of whom turned on Tuesday to the grim task of preparing for funerals. Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the shooting and stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims near the movie theater where they were shot.

Authorities say Holmes began shopping for firearms while studying neuroscience. He joined the program in June 2011 after receiving a National Institutes of Health grant to cover his tuition and provide a $26,000 annual living allowance.

The school refuses to say what specifically Holmes studied. But an online syllabus listed him as making a presentation in May during a class called "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."

In early June, Holmes took a standard oral exam that ends a graduate student's first year. The school will not say whether he passed, but Holmes filed paperwork to withdraw from the program just days later. He never provided a written explanation for his departure.

"He had, as is now common knowledge, excellent academic credentials," said Barry Shur, dean of the university's graduate program.

Shur said the graduate program is "like a family" in which faculty carefully monitor students' progress.

"It would be a logical step to assume there were people in that program who worked closely with him and would have the expertise to assess his behavior," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, a former FBI profiler and the author of the book "Dangerous Instincts: How Gut Feelings Betray Us."

"But being able to recognize concerning, troubling behavior does not mean you can prevent a mass homicide," O'Toole said. "There are many people at a university level who act quirky and strange and don't go out and commit mass murder."

Academics studying the human brain may not have the same ability to size up threats as someone who makes his living spending time with people firing guns, O'Toole said.

Glenn Rotkovich, owner of a private Colorado gun range outside Denver, quickly concluded there was something wrong with Holmes.

Holmes applied to join the range in late June. But Rotkovich said that after calling Holmes back and hearing a "bizarre" voice mail message ? spoken in a strange, low-pitched voice with heavy breathing ? he concluded he didn't want Holmes as a member.

"I flagged him to people and said, if he shows up, I don't trust him," Rotkovich said.

Holmes apparently never went to the range.

The university's silence on the year Holmes spent there contributed to the mystery surrounding his motivations. Administrators refuse to say whether faculty or students saw signs of dangerous behavior in Holmes. Campus police said they had no information on Holmes before the attack.

Holmes remained in solitary confinement Tuesday in Arapahoe County jail, a day after appearing bleary-eyed and disoriented in his initial court appearance. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Working to build their case, a team of lawyers from the district attorney's office spent about 90 minutes inside the movie multiplex where the shooting occurred. Crews were starting to encircle the building with a chain link fence while people continued to flock to a memorial nearby for the victims.

Relatives of those who died were bracing for a string of funeral services, the first of which ? for Gordon Cowden, the oldest of those killed ? was planned for Wednesday. Meanwhile, a woman whose husband remains in a coma after being shot in the head gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the same hospital Tuesday.

A profile for a man whose name and appearance matched Holmes has been removed from a dating website. Match.com spokesman Matthew Traub on Tuesday confirmed reports on TMZ.com and elsewhere that the profile was posted before the movie theater massacre. Traub would not comment on whether Match.com believes Holmes actually posted the profile.

The profile included the question, "Will you visit me in prison?" and said, "I spend a lot of time thinking about the future, mind (equals) blown."

The profile photo showed a man whose hair is reddish orange, similar to Holmes' hair when he appeared in court Monday.

New details emerged about the night of the shooting.

Clad in head-to-toe combat gear, Holmes allegedly burst into a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire. Friends Stephanie Davies and Allie Young, who attended, said the gunman moved around the room yelling and seemingly targeting people.

"He would shout, 'What are you doing? I said stand up!' And he would pick people up. I saw him stand over someone. I just see hair and him holding the shirt and 'boom,'" said Davies, 21.

Outside Colorado, men accused of making threats during or after other screenings of the Batman film have been arrested in separate incidents in Maine, Arizona and Southern California, underscoring moviegoers' anxieties about security.

In Colorado, the shooting has prompted a sudden surge in gun sales.

In three days, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm. That was 25 percent greater than the average Friday-to-Sunday period in 2012, and 43 percent greater than the same period the week prior.

In Arizona, Jeff Serdy, owner of A.J.I. Sporting Goods in Apache Junction, estimated he saw up to 40 percent more traffic than usual in the two days after the killings.

"I looked out on the floor and said to myself, 'Whoa, look at all these people,'" Serdy said, noting many customers expressed concern that lawmakers may use the shooting to try to pass gun restrictions. Political analysts say there is little appetite in Congress for such laws.

Dolphins' 'Ochocinco' changes name back to Johnson

MIAMI (AP) ? Chad Ochocinco is officially no more. The Miami Dolphins wide receiver has changed his name back to the original Chad Johnson.

Johnson legally changed his name Monday in an appearance at the Broward County Courthouse. The change he announced via Twitter quickly follows his July Fourth marriage to Evelyn Lozada of TV's "Basketball Wives" fame.

Johnson was known as "Ochocinco" for the past four seasons. The name was a playful reference to the No. 85 he wore on his jersey.

Johnson was a six-time Pro Bowl receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals. He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins earlier this year after being cut by the New England Patriots.

For his NFL career, Johnson has 766 receptions for 11,059 yards and 67 touchdowns.

Mexico Hosts The World, Again | Content for Reprint

Author: Robert Nickel | Total views: 80 Comments: 0
Word Count: 669 Date:

The 1986 World Cup was only three years away when Columbia announced to the the world that they would no longer be able to act as hosts, mainly due to financial difficulties. This left FIFA (Federation of International Football Associations) in a bind as Columbia had been chosen as host back in 1974. Years of preparation are need to host a tournament of this magnitude, so FIFA needed to find someone with both the stadiums and infrastructure to pull it off. Canada and the USA both submitted individual bids, but FIFA went with a country with the experience to put on a great tournament.

Mexico finally had its day and in 1983, FIFA awarded the 1986 World Cup to Mexico. The hosting of the World Cup was given to this country for a second time and this was a first. The first time Mexico held the World Cup, was back in 1970. The 1970 World Cup is considered by many to be the greatest tournament of all time.

Mexico's accomplishment of picking up the hosting duties of a World Cup on short notice is even more remarkable, because in 1985, Mexico City (where the final game of the tournament was to be held), was rocked by an enormous earthquake that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths. Mexico, rather than abandoning the tournament, pushed ahead as the event would be a great moral booster for the people of Mexico.

Unlike the Olympics, the World Cup is an event that an entire country can share in. The 1986 tournament hosted twenty-four teams in twelve different stadiums in nine cities. The people of Mexico got to enjoy 52 games and witnessed 132 goals. This tournament also spawned a stadium phenomenon, which is enjoyed around the world to this day - the (Mexican) Wave.

To ensure the success of its team in the opening round, Mexico once again turned to its greatest ally when it comes to playing soccer games at home. All of Mexico's first round games were played in the enormous, Azteca stadium. The Azteca Stadium was constructed between 1961 and 1966. It's at an incredible 2,240 meters (7,350 ft) above sea level. It seats 110,000 rabid fans and is known as one of the most intimidating stadiums to play in in the world. The extraordinary heat of the noon day coupled with the high altitude, made playing at this venue quite a challenge for visiting teams.

The T.V. audience was anticipated to be huge, so a sports broadcaster who was up to the task was required. Televisa, one of the largest T.V. companies in the world, stepped up and set a new standard for sports filming. Within seconds of any important action, replays from up to six angles, were broadcast around the world giving multiple bird's eye views. Very expert video editors provided the TV watchers with the best and quickest replays of that era, even before the days of digital media.

Unfortunately it was not to be Mexico's year when they played for the 1986 World Cup, although thye did hold their own. Just as in 1970, the first time they held the tournament, they progressed to the quarter finals. Mexico was shutout in 1970 by the eventual finalists Italy, by a score of 4-1. Germany had a tough game in 1986 when they became the eventual finalists. The German were the final winners after over time and penalties, but Mexico could easily have been the victors.

Although Mexico didn't win it all, they proved for a second time that they know how to put on a World Cup. The 1986 World Cup is probably the closest rival to the 1970 World Cup for the title of greatest tournament of all time. Pele, possibly one of the greatest players of all time, was present in 1970 during the games. In 1986, the heir to Pele's thrown, Diego Maradona, staked his claim as the greatest player of all time. Either way, the fans got what they game for, the greatest tournament on earth.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: Middle-Grade Review: Cardboard

I?m not usually a big fan of graphic novels.? I did enjoy a few of the Bone books, by author Jeff Smith, that we had around the house and my son loved the Sardine in Outer Space books by Emmanuel Guibert books when he was younger, but I rarely read or request graphic novels now.? Scholastic recently sent me a few graphic novels (uncorrected proofs) that I hadn?t asked for, so I thought I?d just take a quick look when I had a few minutes.? The first one I read was Cardboard by Doug Tennapel, and I was impressed by its clever premise and creative story.

Mike is a single father without a job.? The opening panels make it clear that he is a good guy and a skilled carpenter, but he can?t find work in the depressed economy and is becoming desperate.? Today is his son?s birthday, and he wants to get Cam something special, but he doesn?t even have enough money for food.? On his way home, he sees a roadside stand where a mysterious man is selling toys, but he can?t afford any of them.? When he mentions that his son is a really good boy who deserves a good birthday present, the man offers him an empty cardboard box for exactly the amount of change in Mike?s pocket.? Mike thinks it?s pretty lame, but he figures he and Cam can do some sort of creative project with the cardboard box.

He brings it home, and Cam good-naturedly suggests they build a boxer out of the box, so father and son work together late into the night to build a cardboard man.? While they are sleeping, the cardboard man comes to life and announces that his name is Bill.? Mike and Cam are astounded but thrilled with the magical cardboard that brought their new friend to life, but the neighborhood bully, Marcus, discovers their secret and wants the magic for himself.

The story turns into a fantastical adventure, with all sorts of cardboard creations coming to life and wreaking havoc on the neighborhood.? It?s a battle of Cam?s (and Bill?s) goodness versus Marcus? evil, and things quickly get out of hand until the boys are no longer in control.? As I said, I?m certainly not a graphic novel expert, but I enjoyed reading this and thought the drawings and text told an interesting story.? The novel is filled with action and is fast-paced, an original and exciting story sure to please young boys and reluctant readers in particular.

My Kind of Town: Eureka Takes Its Final Bow

So, the triumphant return of <insert favorite summer cable series here> is great and all and Ima let you finish, but it was the end of an era at the SyFy Channel Monday evening, when the final episode of the quirky dramedy Eureka aired ? a.k.a. one of Jen-Luc Piquant?s favorite TV shows of all time. OF ALL TIME! She?s been a weepy pixelated mess ever since., even though the writers, cast and crew came through with a terrific series finale despite being abruptly cancelled with little time to wrap up loose ends.

For those deprived souls outside the loop, Eureka is an affectionate paean to the small town, with a twist: its entire population is made up of brilliant scientists (and their families), all of whom work at a vast, sooper sekrit lab called Global Dynamics that gets a large part of its funding from the Department of Defense, yet is dedicated to curiosity-driven research ? at least in principle. The show?s premise is partially inspired by places like Los Alamos, Berkeley Lab, Livermore National Lab, and Bell Labs, but mostly it?s a love letter to science and scientists by co-creators Jaime Paglia and Bruce Miller.

At the heart of it all is Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson), the quintessential Everyman with the big, big heart, who must team up with the brainy bunch week after week to combat the very exotic complications that routinely plague Eureka: AI attack drones gone rogue, everyone in town sharing each other?s dreams, nanobots pervading the lab, the brain-jacking of a major character via a brain-to-brain neural implant, rips in the fabric of spacetime ? plus a time-traveling stint in 1947 that reset the entire series timeline ? and a fictional manned mission to Titan thanks to the invention of a faster-than-light drive. We?re talking science fiction, people, albeit inspired by real science.

Once, in Season 4.5, the town experienced a sudden disruption of the Higgs field that caused a lot of otherwise heavy objects to float, and while I gave into the temptation to nerd-gas about that a bit over at Discovery News (one of the hazards of being married to a physicist), it was an amusing way of playing with some very big ideas that don?t usually make it onto TV.

As actor Wil Wheaton, who plays particle physicist Dr. Isaac Parrish, shared on his blog, one scene from that episode (?Up in the Air?) captures the lovable geekitude of scientists:

When we?re in the [Global Dynamics] rotunda with Carter and Henry [Joe Morton], talking about my Higgs Disruptor ? Parrish is talking about how his Disruptor is signed, but the authenticity of signatures from that era is questionable. You can barely see it, but during rehearsal, Joe and I realized that we?re both scientists, and we?re talking about a piece of antique equipment that was signed by Higgs himself! We decided that, being nerdy scientists, we?d get excited about that, and temporarily forget that there?s a bunch of antimatter hanging out above Eureka waiting to deliver an Earth-shattering KABOOM!

The scientists are the rock stars in this wacky town. Frankly, what Eureka does best is capture the culture of science: the almost childlike enthusiasm and sense of wonder about the world, and the endless curiosity that drives scientists to ask questions, test theories, all of which leads to even more questions. They worry about their funding, deal with family crises and lab mix-ups, and above all pursue interesting science.

The scientists are also believably diverse (male, female, black, Asian, short, tall, chubby, plain, good-looking, and everything in between). Fargo (Neil Grayston) might be the quintessential nerd, but Nathan Stark (Ed Quinn) is tall, dark, handsome and brooding, and very much a slick ?company man.?

Carter?s love interest, Allyson (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), ends up heading Global Dynamics in Season 2, while Henry (Joe Morton) is the wacky experimentalist with the high ideas who serves as the town?s conscience ? perchance even its ?soul,? if a town can be said to have one.

High school is a different experience in Eureka. Instead of jocks lording it over the geeks and nerds, being smart is cool, with academic achievement valued far more than athletics. In one episode, Carter?s delinquent daughter, Zoe (Jordan Hinson), is awaiting her IQ test results, and Carter reveals his own IQ is 111: ?more than 100%!? It becomes the trendy high school insult for awhile (as in ?That is sooo 111??), although Zoe turns out to have a much higher IQ, and actually fits in quite well as time goes on, eventually attending Harvard Medical School.

One of my favorite episodes in Season 1 features Henry?s old girlfriend visiting with her husband, a brilliant (supposedly) scientist with a reputation for sweeping in and solving any challenge at the 11th hour. Except it turns out he?s not that brilliant ? he just has a mind-wiping device that can ?steal? people?s memories ? just long enough for them to forget the solution to a problem, so he can sweep in and pretend he solved it. He?s done this to his own wife, stealing her own professional reputation and earning the accolades that should have come her way. The device he uses may be fictional, but the gender dynamic most certainly is not, and academic misconduct, while rare, does indeed happen.

The show does all of this without ever resorting to hidden agendas and overt ?messaging,? which make for lousy narratives. It?s always an interesting dynamic weaving real science into science fiction, and the Eureka writers manage that balance very well ?? but let?s face it, a good story is always going to come first.

One of co-creator Jaime Paglia?s favorite examples of this natural tension between getting the science right and telling a good story occurred when writing the episode ?Blink,? Eureka?s version of a ?Just Say No? anti-drug campaign (and a very effective one). Global Dynamic scientists under pressure to complete their projects by a deadline ? or risk losing their funding ? turn to a hopped-up form of speed.

Jaime wanted to show one such user, having overdosed, moving so fast while running that he literally can run across the surface of Lake Archimedes without sinking. He asked science consultant Kevin Grazier (who has also consulted for Battlestar Galactica and spent years as a scientist at JPL) how fast that would be. Kevin did some calculations and decided it would be around 565 MPH ? a speed at which the flesh would likely be flayed from the body, among other inflicted damage, so it was impossible. ?Well?. I?m gonna do it,? was Jaime?s response, so Kevin sighed and gave him the basic outlines for a remotely plausible scenario.

Before the iPhone?s Siri, there was S.A.R.A.H. The acronym stands for Self Actuated Residential Automated Habitat, a literal ?smart house? built inside an abandoned fallout shelter that serves as Carter?s residence throughout the series. S.A.R.A.H. is an AI that can open and close the hermetically sealed doors, control internal lights and temperature, and make sure Jack has a nice cold beer on tap and a tape of the latest baseball game when he gets home from a hard day?s work. In a pinch, she can diagnose injuries and compare current DNA samples against samples on file. (Fargo created her, and named her S.A.R.A.H. after Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar. S.A.R.A.H.?s ?voice? is Fargo speaking in a feminine falsetto.)

S.A.R.A.H. may be a fictional Dream House, but Georgia Tech has the Aware Home, an ordinary-looking two-story house tricked out with all the latest sensing equipment: cameras in the ceiling, microphones in the walls, and invisible trip wires in the doorways. There?s even a ?smart dollhouse,? part of project called InterHome. Per a 2009 article in New Scientist:

Developed at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, the house is fitted with a network of infrared sensors connected to a central computer. By working out which rooms we tend to occupy at different times, software algorithms learn when we need the lights, heating or air conditioning systems turned on and, perhaps more importantly, when we don?t, says Johann Siau, the project?s coordinator. ?

InterHome also aims to boost home security. By connecting door and window lock sensors to the computer, it can send a text message to the homeowner if they have forgotten to lock the front door, for instance. Texting back will lock any doors or windows in question.

Sure, S.A.R.A.H. has a rather mercurial temperament. She once locked Carter out when he forgot to call to tell her he?d be late, and when Carter considered leaving the town of Eureka, her abandonment issues kicked into high gear and she locked everyone inside ? using her laser defense system to zap the pizza delivery boy when he tried to escape.

But all that changed when she fell for Deputy Andy (Ty Olsson), Carter?s well-nigh indestructible robotic sidekick in later seasons; AIs have feelings, too, at least if they?ve been upgraded with special emotion software. So even S.A.R.A.H. got a happy ending.

As Alisdair Wilkins said over at io9: ?What show other than Eureka would throw into its big wrap-up montage a shot of an ecstatic robot about to have sex with a house? No other show, that?s what, and that?s all the reason I need to miss Eureka.? Sniff.

Eureka had a great run, and went out on a high note. And for those who missed experiencing the series the first time around, well, the residents of this scientific paradise will live on via DVD.
